Seriously people, DO NOT say these things to English teachers:
I speak English, I could teach your class. This statement is a close cousin to the old, "I went to school, so I could teach." Trust us, teaching is not as easy as we make it look sometimes. We juggle assessment, motivation, special needs, technology updates, language learners, and So. Much. More.
Don't you hate teaching all these outdated texts? No, actually we love the timeless tales and universal themes found in the traditional cannon and as well as our contemporary additions. We also work tirelessly to make both fiction and informational texts relevant to our students.
Nobody reads anymore. That's just just crazy talk. This generation has a bad reputation for just looking at their phones 24-7, but if you spend time with today's teens like English teachers do, you will see that a good number still love a good novel.
Wat do u think? There is an argument for appropriate contexts for text-speak, but an English teacher's homework is probably not the place!
With word processing and computers, no one needs to learn to write anymore. In today's information saturated society, it is even more important that students understand how to analyze rhetoric and construct a solid argument.
